Mildred B. Hunter Photograph Album

Mildred B. Hunter Photograph Album - circa 1915

Compiled by an unknown person and owned by Mildred B. Hunter around 1915, the family album holds 69 pages of black and white snapshots and souvenir prints of various sizes. Many of the souvenir prints are hand tinted. A male member of the family was in the U.S. Army, apparently serving in Hawaii and the Philippines. There are a number of photos taken in Europe, especially in Grenoble, France.

The souvenir photos include images of: Hawaiian fishermen, surfers, dancers, children, and pageants as well as Iolani Palace, Haleiwa Hotel, Library of Hawaii, and Washington Place. Landscapes include Diamond Head views, water falls, seascapes, volcano photos, rice and pineapple growing, palm trees, silversword plants, Onomea Arch, and Japanese gardens.

The snapshots include: family members, houses, a European castle, and cityscapes. Groups of military men engage in various activities including various ships, as well as with Moro people in the Philippines. The title “The Horrors of War” includes images of bodies and bones in the Philippines. Photos of Hawaii include Nuuanu Pali, Windward Oahu, a sugar mill, landscapes, palm trees, and two paniolo photos.

The album pages have been placed in protective sleeves and are not attached to the covers.

Gift from Carlyn Draneas, 2007.
