Selma Hoermann Spitzer Photograph Album (1912-1914)

The album cover is made of black lacquer with a center scene of water, iris, and birds done in gilt and carved ivory and shell. Japanese fans painted in gilt surround the center panel. The back cover is black lacquer.

Selma Hoermann Spitzer, aunt of Irmgard Hormann, owned the album, which holds family photos taken between 1912 and 1914.

Twenty pages hold an average of five black-and-white photographs each, ranging in size from 2¾ by 1¾ inches to 5¾ by 3½ inches. A few commercial photos in postcard format show Honolulu, Waikiki, the Pali, and the University of Hawaii.

Some of the family photos are identified, including one labeled “Mrs. Bernard Hoermann of Watertown WI visits her daughters in Honolulu Selma Hoermann married Arthur Spitzer Adele Hoermann married Lawrence Clark and Bertha [Hoermann] Harders [married Hartwig Harders]. Hartwig Harders is identified as brewmaster at Primo Brewery from 1912 until Prohibition in 1917. The majority of photos are of family members at home and visiting around Oahu, Hawaii, and Maui. A few Mainland photos are included.
