Title
Irmgard Hormann Early Honolulu Photograph Album
Description
This album holds 87 photographs and an index to the images. Photo sizes range from postcard format, 3 ½†x 5 ½â€, to 8â€x10â€. There are numerous photos of 6â€x 9â€, 4â€x 10â€, and 5â€x 8†sizes. All appear to be sepia tone reprints of images made by professional photographers between approximately 1870 and 1918. With the exception of one scene of Kalawao, Molokai, all the images were taken on Oahu.
Seven photos in postcard format include posed Hawaiian subjects: a group of craftswomen, horseback riders, hula dancers, a musician, men with poi, net fishermen, and a procession of alii from a canoe. Two other postcard images show luau preparations by Pacific Island men and the Phoenix Fountain in Kapiolani Park.
The larger photographs include many street scenes, public buildings, private homes, the harbor and waterfront, Nuuanu Pali, Easter service at Punchbowl, and the Mormon Temple at Laie.
The album was presented to the Hawaiian Historical Society by Irmgard Hormann in 1995.
